Why Build an MVP First?
The biggest mistake first-time app entrepreneurs make is trying to build everything before launching. They spend 12 months and ₹25 lakhs building a "complete" app only to discover that users don't use the most expensive feature, or the core assumption about what users want was wrong.
Building an MVP first solves this by getting your core value proposition in front of real users quickly and cheaply, so you can learn what actually works before committing your full budget.
Build the smallest thing that tests your most important business assumption, learn from real user behavior, and iterate. Repeat until you have product-market fit, then scale.
What Should an MVP Include?
An MVP should include exactly one core user flow — the minimum set of features that allows a user to experience the primary value proposition of your app.
The MVP Feature Filter
For each proposed feature, ask these questions:
- Does the app fail to deliver its core value without this feature? If no → cut it from MVP.
- Can this feature be manually handled initially? If yes → cut it from MVP (use a human workaround for now).
- Does this feature help us learn something essential about user behavior? If no → cut it from MVP.
What to Include vs Exclude
| Feature Type | Include in MVP? | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| User registration/login | ✅ Yes | Core to personalization and security |
| Core value feature (the main thing your app does) | ✅ Yes | Without this, there's no app |
| Payment integration | ⚠️ Maybe | Only if monetization is the thing being validated |
| Push notifications | ⚠️ Minimal | Basic notifications only |
| Admin dashboard | ❌ No | Manage manually at first |
| Advanced search/filters | ❌ No | Basic search sufficient for MVP |
| Social sharing | ❌ No | Virality features are Phase 2 |
| Multiple languages | ❌ No | Start with one language |
Measuring MVP Success
Define your success metrics before building. Without predefined metrics, you'll rationalize poor results. Common MVP metrics:
- Activation rate: % of registered users who complete the core action at least once
- Day 7 / Day 30 retention: % of users who return after 7 or 30 days
- Session duration: How long users spend per session
- NPS (Net Promoter Score): In-app survey: "How likely are you to recommend this app to a friend?" (0–10)
- Conversion rate: % of users who perform the monetization action (purchase, subscribe, etc.)
